Virtuosity.

The diversity of Bruno Barbey’s (b.1941) topics and his insightful image vocabulary have shaped his extraordinary reputation as a photo journalist. Passages at Fotografie Forum Frankfurt showcases 100 photographs dating from the early 1960s to the present day. It begins with the series Les Italiens, Barbey’s first photo essay (1961–1964), which enabled him to join Magnum Photos at the age of 25. From 1966 onwards, he pioneered the use of colour film in photojournalism, introducing it to the discipline whilst on a photo assignment in Brazil. His vibrant impressions of Morocco, the home of his childhood, reveal a further virtuosity in the use of colours.
