Song of Songs: Representations of the self, spirituality and states of mind in art – from modernity to the digital age is now open in our Mayfair gallery. Taking its name from the eponymous painting (1933) by the British Surrealist, writer, poet and occultist, Ithell Colquhoun (1906-1988), the exhibition presents 12 of her master works in dialogue with contemporary artists.
Exhibiting artists: Ithell Colquhoun, Linder, Bharti Kher, Anna Weyant, Elaine Hoey, Richard Malone, Grace Weir, Jesse Mockrin, Clare Ormerod, Matthew Stone, Stacey Gillian Abe, Suchitra Mattai.
The exhibition features an intergenerational group of artists who explore themes of self-image and spirituality, the mind and nature, as they investigate the meaning of transformation of humankind in the 21st century.

Touched by the hand of Ithell: my fascination with a forgotten surrealist

Historically, surrealism has been utterly dominated by big male personalities… Despite having been with us all these years, we are suddenly noticing Ithell Colquhoun everywhere. Her time is now.

Representations of the self, spirituality and states of mind in art

This painting, it seems to me, comes from some hinterland of the mind, some border-line region, since elements drawn from both ‘actual’ and ‘potential’ worlds are to be found.
