Nanna Heitmann: Witnesses – When The Birds Will Fly Again

On the 50th anniversary of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), a new book, Witnesses: 50 Years of Humanity, looks back at the crises that the medical organisation has served at over the last five decades. Through the photos and words of those who lived through these events, the book bears witness to the difficult mission of providing assistance.

In this article, Nanna Heitmann looks back on the time she spent photographing in Iraq on assignment for Médecins Sans Frontières, four years after ISIS had been driven out of the city.

W. Eugene Smith Fine Prints

For the first time ever, the estate of W. Eugene Smith is offering modern prints of his most famous images. Beginning with his powerful shots of the Pacific invasion during World War II, Smith forged an impressive career at LIFE magazine, which included classic photo essays like ‘Country Doctor’, ‘Nurse Midwife’ and ‘Spanish Village’. After leaving LIFE, Smith pursued his acclaimed freelance work on projects such as ‘Pittsburgh’, ‘Jazz Loft’ and ultimately ‘Minamata’, the story of which is the subject of a recently released feature film.
