original bauhaus.

6.9.2019 – 27.1.2020

The Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung hosted by the Berlinische Galerie

Unique work and series, remake and original are inseparably linked in the history of the Bauhaus. Bauhaus artists like Otti Berger or László Moholy-Nagy discovered the innovative potential of technological media and used it to create one-of-a-kind works of art. Bauhaus ideas and myths have been carried on for 100 years. Re-editions have permitted everyday objects like the Bauhaus lamp to become so “typically Bauhaus” long after the school closed. The Bauhaus existed for only 14 years (1919–1933) in Germany, but it shaped generations of artists, teachers and designers. This exhibition presents famous, familiar, forgotten and rediscovered material from the Bauhaus-Archiv and special loans from international collections.

An accompanying catalogue and a “Bauhaus Exercise Book” will be published to coincide with the exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie. Together with the Bauhaus Agents programme, we invite you to personally try out 100 exercises from the preliminary course. A symposium with the working title “Don’t do it yourself!” will examine Bauhaus teaching methods and the value of experimentation and expertise in education and training today.

The centenary exhibition by Berlin’s Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung – in cooperation with the Berlinische Galerie – celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus’s founding in 2019 is supported by the federal state of Berlin and the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
