America in Crisis at the Saatchi Gallery London: 21 January to 3 April, 2022

Half a century on from the groundbreaking 1969 Magnum Photos project America in Crisis, Magnum and the Saatchi Gallery, London is presenting a group show of the same name from 21 January to 3 April, 2022.

Curated by former Global Cultural Director of Magnum Sophie Wright, Gregory Harris from Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, and photographer and academic Tara Pixley, the 2022 exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery enters into dialogue with the 1969 project in light of contemporary debate about the United States’ relationship to racism, truth and democracy.

Postcards From America Box Set

In May 2011, five photographers – Paolo Pellegrin, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Alec Soth, Mikhael Subotzky – and writer Ginger Strand set out from Austin, Texas, in an RV. Two weeks and 1750 miles later, they arrived in Oakland, California. The resulting limited-edition book is a collection of objects – a book, five bumper stickers, a newspaper, two fold-outs, three cards, a poster and five zines, all in a signed and numbered box – that collectively document the experience.

New York Fine Prints

The city of New York has been central to the story of Magnum and its collective of photographers since the agency’s founding in 1947. As the legend goes, the agency was founded over a magnum of champagne at the Museum of Modern Art, and so took its name from that particularly generous-sized bottle. The New York bureau was opened in the same year, and the city has remained a home to Magnum and its photographers to this day.

This curation of fine prints celebrates the photographic influence of New York City on Magnum Photos and its members.
