Geometric Connections.

Marietta Varga reframes our relationship with brutalist architecture in her latest series, Raw Hill. Staged and photographed at a series of landmark buildings – including the National Theatre, Barbican and the Alexandra Road Estate – the images draw attention to the characteristic and playful nature of brutalist design through choreographed human interaction. Popular from the 1950s to the mid-1970s, this architectural style has most commonly become associated with governmental and educational institution buildings, with a lack of artistic value and beauty. Varga’s poetic scenes rebuke negative connotations and re-engage the viewer with brutalism’s unique structural aesthetic and spirit.
